Additional Information

First Aid provision in the workplace is a requirement of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. Following the guidance above will help to ensure that employers provide adequate and appropriate personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. First aid provision must be made at all times when employees are at work. In practice, this means that a minimum of two personnel must be appointed to first aid duties to ensure that planned and unplanned absences can be covered. The organisation's risk assessment may determine that a higher number of first aid personnel are required to ensure that continuous cover can be provided.

The HSE recommends that members of the public who visit the workplace should be taken into account when determining first aid provision.

In schools, the duty of care to provide first aid facilities for pupils and students may be covered by personnel holding HSE approved qualifications. However, the provisions of the Early Years Foundation Stage make it a legal requirement for personnel qualified in paediatric first aid to be available at all times. Please see the section below for further information.
